Nuestra Loteria

2025

Project Artwork

Monitored 8 different classes with the project for 4 weeks

In collaboration with the Santa Maria Joint Union High School District, Corazón del Pueblo, and Ethnic & Gender Studies (EGS) educators, this powerful community-centered art project brings together students from Santa Maria and Ernest Righetti High Schools to reimagine the traditional Mexican game of Lotería through a decolonized lens.

Guided by the principles of art by the community, for the community, students are invited to reflect on identity, culture, and resistance. Each student creates a modern interpretation of a Lotería card, embracing art as a means of individual and collective consciousness—free from the pressures of commercialism or profit.

Through this process, students explore art as a vital tool for dialogue, activism, and community education. This project not only celebrates cultural heritage but also empowers youth to use visual storytelling to challenge systems, uplift voices, and build solidarity.

Whole project consisted of 220 students and artworks
