Through this mural, I pay homage to the farmworking children of Santa Barbara County, particularly those in the Santa Maria Valley, and seek to bring visibility to their often-unrecognized experiences. While many children spend their summers and weekends on vacation or with friends, many farmworking youth wake at 5:00 a.m. to work in the fields alongside their families.

As the cost of living continues to rise and recent ICE raids have created fear and instability throughout the region, many young people have taken on greater responsibility to help support their households. They balance physically demanding labor with school, family obligations, and the emotional weight of living in a community shaped by uncertainty and fear. At the same time, they often face misunderstanding and indifference from a county that benefits immensely from their labor.

This mural is meant to bring attention to a reality that many people do not see or acknowledge: much of the strawberries, grapes, and vegetables grown on California's Central Coast are harvested with the labor of children and youth working alongside their families. By honoring their resilience and sacrifice, and I hope to foster greater awareness, empathy, and dialogue within our community to bring dignity and safety in to their lives
